Reportedly, the European Commission (EC) is taking action against Italy over Ilva steel plant in Taranto, Europe's largest steelmaker in an effort to reduce the environmental impact.

The EC has found that Italy is failing to ensure that Ilva complies with EU requirements on industrial emissions that may cause damages for human health and the environment, also is failing to respect the Environmental Liability Directive, and is therefore given two months to reply on a formal notice.

According to the EC statement that heavy pollution of uncontrolled emissions generated during steel production processes is found in the air, soil, and from surface and ground waters both at the Ilva site and in nearby inhabited areas of the city of Taranto.

In addition, the Italian authorities showed no sufficient evidence that they have ensured the plant to take the necessary remedial plans or bears the costs of such plans to deal with the damage that has already been caused.

However, the Italian authorities have recently made commitments to address the situation and are ready to work in their efforts with EC to resolve these serious issues.
