In May this year, India estimated that the total tariffs on metal products exported by India to the US were about US$1.91 billion due to the US tariffs on steel and aluminum products. Therefore, India imposed corresponding tariffs on some US goods in accordance with WTO rules to counter the US tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Recently, the Indian government has been revising the retaliatory tariff proposals for US steel and aluminum tariffs following the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

India said that the US increased tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, which damaged India's exports worth US$7.6 billion, and the total tariffs imposed on this basis will reach US$3.82 billion.

India proposed to suspend concessions or other commitments, which may take the form of increased tariffs on certain goods originating in the US, and it emphasized that it reserves the right to adjust the list of relevant goods and the applicable tariff rates.

During the submission of the updated counter-proposal, India and the US are conducting trade negotiations. The Indian delegation is expected to visit Washington this week, and the negotiations will cover interim agreements and broader bilateral agreements.
