US President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on most Canadian imports to 35%, effective on August 1. In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump stated the move was due to Canada's retaliatory duties against previous US tariffs, its alleged role in fentanyl flow, and an unsustainable trade deficit against the US.

Carney responded in a post on X, defending Canada's efforts against fentanyl and pledging to continue protecting Canadian workers and businesses. He said that the Canadian government will continue to work with the US to meet the August 1 deadline for a trade deal.
