US President Trump decided to impose tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminum imports. However, Canadian Prime Minister Carney did not raise tariffs on the US because both parties are still negotiating and strive to reach a deal within 30 days.

Carney said that its counter-tariffs on the US will be raised or lowered on July 21, depending on the outcome of the negotiations. The Canadian government stressed its position that the US government should abolish all unfair trade practices as a starting point for negotiations.

In addition, Carney stated that the purpose of the formulated tariff quota is to enhance the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry and support enterprises that have lost American business due to the US punitive tariffs.
