Voestalpine has already made huge investments in environmental protection and climate change in the past decades. As part of the global decarbonizing process, greentec steel is their phased plan for green steel production. It will start from Voestalpine's blast furnaces in Linz and Donawitz which will be replaced by electric arc furnaces. By 2027, Voestalpine shall be ready for this.

With both the planned EAF in Linz and the one in Donawitz, they will reduce their current CO2 emissions by around 30%. This equals nearly 5% of Austria’s annual CO2 emissions, which saves almost 4 million tons of CO2 per year. Another blast furnace will be replaced with an EAF in 2032 or 2033.

Unlike the current two-stage blast furnace route, in which the liquid pig iron produced in the blast furnace is then processed into crude steel in the steel plant, an EAF uses green electricity to produce crude steel in just one single step.

They are now taking some measures to further expand their renewable energy generation in order to meet future demand for green electricity. The company aims to be carbon-neutral by 2050.
