US ferrous scrap exports face challenges from Turkey’s unrest and Ramadan slowdown

Political instability in Turkey and the end of Ramadan could impact US ferrous scrap exports in early April.

Turkey, a key buyer of US recycled steel, has seen mills suspend purchases due to political tensions, currency fluctuations, and weak steel sales. If the Turkish lira continues to depreciate, imported US scrap will become more expensive, leading Turkish mills to opt for alternative materials like Chinese and Malaysian billet.

Ramadan's conclusion on March 31, followed by the Ramazan Bayrami holidays, is temporarily slowing market activity in Turkey, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, further limiting trade.

Alternative buyers, such as India and South Asian ports, may help offset reduced Turkish demand. Despite these challenges, US ferrous scrap prices remain strong, providing stability in the global market.
