Tesla halts China-made parts imports due to high US tariffs

Tesla has suspended plans to import parts from China for its Cybercab and Semi electric trucks due to soaring US tariffs, potentially delaying production. 

Initially, the automaker intended to absorb a 34% tariff, but with duties now reaching 145%, the plan was scrapped, according to sources.

The parts were crucial for trial production in October and mass production in 2026. Cybercab is set to be made in Texas, while Semi will be produced in Nevada. 

CEO Elon Musk warned that even with US manufacturing, Tesla faces significant impacts from tariffs. Washington is also considering a 25% duty on key minerals, which could further disrupt the supply chains of parts.

Tesla’s upcoming earnings call on April 22 may address tariff-related challenges.
