SMS group has completed a process automation upgrade at CELSA Barcelona’s medium section mill in Castellbisbal, Spain. The project, finished without pro-duction interruption, involved replacing an outdated level 2 automation system with a state-of-the-art X-Pact® solution.

This modernization secures the mill's long-term operational stability and produc-tion efficiency, important for its annual 900,000-ton capacity of long rolled products. The new system features an open software architecture for easy maintenance and future expansion. X-Pact® Vision webHMI, utilizing 4K screen resolution, consolidates information onto a single screen, streamlining opera-tions and improving decision-making compared to the previous multi-screen setup.

This successful upgrade reflects the long-standing partnership between CELSA and SMS, allowing CELSA to maintain its competitive position in the European and US markets.
