HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to establish shipbuilding base in Morocco

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) plans to establish a new shipbuilding base in Morocco to strengthen its global production network and meet rising demand. With its docks fully booked for the next three years, the company aims to expand strategically into key regions.

HD HHI is preparing to bid for a 30-year operational license for the Casablanca Shipyard, offered by Morocco’s National Ports Agency. The 210,000 m² facility will be the largest shipyard in Africa once completed. It will include a land-based dock, lifting platform, and multiple berths.

This initiative aligns with Morocco’s goal to expand its commercial fleet from 16 to 100 vessels by 2040. HD HHI plans to serve both local and European customers from this new base. The move is part of HD Hyundai Group’s global strategy to expand via long-term operating rights, avoiding high-risk acquisitions.

The company has already established overseas shipyards in Vietnam and the Philippines, and is pursuing further partnerships in the US, India, and Peru.
