India is importing less finished steel from China. In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026, China supplied only 22% of India’s steel imports, down from 32% in the fiscal year 2024. Meanwhile, India’s own crude steel production is growing fast, with output reaching 152 million tons in 2025.

The country aims to produce 255 million tons annually by 2030. Small and medium-sized mills now contribute nearly half of India’s steel capacity. With strong domestic demand and government support, India is becoming less dependent on foreign steel.
