It was reported that ArcelorMittal explored the use of hydrogen in the steel production process at its plant in Hamburg. This action was to reduce CO2 emissions and also for the reduction of iron ore. This reduction of iron ore will be demonstrated on an annual production of 100,000 tons. The demonstrated mill will be built in the coming years.

The Hamburg plant has production processes with high efficiency by applying natural gas in a direct reduction plant. The use of hydrogen will be tested in a new shaft furnace and will be achieved by pressure swing adsorption.

The mill will apply hydrogen generated from renewable sources in order to reduce carbon emissions. Its Ghent plant waste carbon gases will be further applied for the production of alternative fuels or chemical products.
