Jindal United Steel Limited (JUSL), a subsidiary of Jindal Stainless, has contracted British equipment manufacturer Primetals Technologies to fully upgrade its hot-strip mill for producing plates and coils at the Jajpur plant in Odisha. 

As part of the upgrade, Primetals Technologies will expand the heavy plate processing area of ​​the steel mill, thereby increasing production capacity and product quality in steel plate manufacturing. The upgrade also includes ordering a new coil box, fully upgrading the work roll cooling system of the seven finishing mill stands, and introducing a new automation system for the cooling beds.

JUSL said that these modernization upgrades will also focus on improving the quality of strips. The work roll cooling system of the finishing mill will be upgraded to a more efficient cooling water distribution system while maintaining the original water consumption, which is expected to further improve the surface quality of the rolled products.

The upgraded steel mill is expected to be operational by December 2026.

JSUL's existing hot-strip mill was supplied by Primetals Technologies in 2012 and is capable of producing plates with a width of up to 1,650 mm and thicknesses ranging from 11 to 80 mm, as well as strip products with a width of up to 1,650 mm and thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 12.7 mm.
