Tata Steel UK has awarded a significant contract to Welsh engineering company Systems Group for the first phase of refurbishing its two continuous casters in Port Talbot, South Wales. The Maesteg-based engineering firm will undertake crucial structural and pipework replacement on the two casters, which convert liquid steel from the electric arc furnace (EAF) into solid slabs.

This project is key to Tata Steel UK's £1.25 billion transition to greener steelmaking. Extending the casters' lifespan supports the transfer to sustainable, low-CO2 steel production as the company prepares for a new EAF by late 2027. This EAF is projected to cut Port Talbot's carbon emissions by about 90%, or 5 million tons of CO2 every year.

Ryan O'Neill, Managing Director at Systems Group, expressed pride in contributing to the future of South Wales steelmaking and low-carbon production. Tata Steel expects to award further contracts for electrical, mechanical, and process control system upgrades soon.
