Wind turbine manufacturer Enercon GmbH, along with Salzgitter AG's Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH and TM Group’s SMB Schönebecker Maschinenbau GmbH, is collaborating to produce a lower-emissions steel tower for wind turbines.

Set for early 2025, the first such tower will be used in an E-138 EP3 turbine at the Diepholzer Bruch wind farm in Germany, making it one of Europe’s first onshore wind turbines with green steel. This cooperation can cut the steel tower’s CO2 footprint by over 70%, according to Enercon’s Procurement Director, Stefan Frey.

In addition, wind turbines, with a hybrid tower concept, are fully recyclable and offer advantages in transport and installation.
