Norwegian maritime innovation company Amon Maritime has announced the launch of a new subsidiary, Amon Bulk, and revealed plans to construct the world’s first large ammonia-fueled bulk carriers. The initiative has secured substantial government backing, with NOK 253 million in funding granted by Enova, Norway’s energy transition agency under the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Amon Maritime confirmed that Amon Bulk will oversee the development of two deep-sea ammonia-powered vessels: a 180,000-deadweight-ton (DWT) Capesize bulk carrier, to be named Amon Bulk 1, and an 80,000-85,000 DWT Kamsarmax bulk carrier, to be named Amon Bulk 2.

Both ships are expected to be delivered by 2029, marking a major milestone in maritime decarbonization.

The project is part of Amon Maritime’s broader mission to develop and deploy ammonia as a zero-carbon marine fuel.
