BHP orders pioneering ammonia vessels from COSCO for cleaner ore transport

BHP has contracted COSCO Shipping Group to charter two ammonia dual-fuelled bulk carriers for transporting iron ore from Western Australia to Northeast Asia.

These new vessels will be among the world's first capable of using ammonia, a marine fuel, positioning them at the forefront of dry bulk sector innovation.

Slated for delivery starting in 2028 under five-year charters, the ships are projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-95% per voyage compared to conventional vessels.

This announcement represents a significant step toward decarbonizing BHP's seaborne iron ore shipments and advancing the maritime industry's sustainability goals. The contracts also support BHP's First Movers Coalition commitment to use zero-emission fuels for 10% of its chartered shipping by 2030.
