Tata Steel plans to transform Europe's steelmaking into low-emission steel in coming years

Tata Steel announced at its annual shareholders' meeting that it will accelerate the transformation of its European process towards low-carbon steelmaking. The company plans to introduce electric arc furnace (EAF) technology in its European plants in fiscal 2028 and start cost restructuring, with an estimated reduction of EUR 500 million in spending by fiscal 2026.

Tata is currently negotiating with the Dutch government to seek support at the policy and financial levels. The company expressed high confidence in the progress of the decarbonization plans in the UK and the Netherlands, emphasizing that it will proceed as scheduled.

In contrast, progress at other European steel mills has been limited. In response to policy uncertainty, ArcelorMittal has suspended related investments in Germany and may terminate its carbon capture and utilization program in Belgium. Despite this, the company has confirmed an investment of EUR 1.2 billion in the construction of an EAF in France.

On the other hand, thyssenkrupp has suspended bidding operations due to the high cost of purchasing hydrogen, but its reduction furnace project continues and is expected to be operated with natural gas instead of hydrogen in the initial stage.
