India’s Ministry of Steel has made a proposal for a merger of NMDC Limited with KIOCL Limited as a strategic measure to strengthen the public steel industry.

The proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and is subject to approval by various ministries and regulators, including the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under the Ministry of Finance.

KIOCL Limited, formerly Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, has focused on iron ore mining and pellet production since 1976 and is under the Ministry of Steel. NMDC is India's largest iron ore producer with a turnover of Rs 21,294 crore in the 2023-24 financial year.
