The White House officially confirmed on Tuesday (June 3) that US President Trump signed an executive order increasing tariffs on most imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, which are scheduled to take effect on June 4, 2025.

This significant hike is to counter foreign countries dumping excess steel and aluminum in the US market, thereby safeguarding American industries and national security.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that ongoing negotiations with trade partners are progressing. The updated tariffs will apply only to the steel and aluminum contents of imported products, while the non-steel and non-aluminum contents of imported products will be subject to other applicable tariffs.

Tariffs on the UK will remain at 25%. However, changes or quotas could be implemented starting July 9, 2025, pending the US-UK Economic Prosperity Deal.

Besides, the administration also stressed strict reporting requirements for steel and aluminum content to prevent false import declarations.
