German steel giant thyssenkrupp recently announced that its subsidiary thyssenkrupp Uhde will cooperate with energy company Uniper to promote ammonia cracking technology in Germany. The project is supported by the North Rhine-Westphalia government and is expected to build the world's first ammonia-to-hydrogen unit with a daily processing capacity of 28 tons of ammonia at Uniper's base in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven.

This technology produces hydrogen and nitrogen through high-temperature cracking of ammonia, and obtains high-purity hydrogen after purification. Germany currently relies heavily on imports for hydrogen, and this project is expected to become an important pillar for localized hydrogen production in the future.

Hydrogen energy is seen as a key way to achieve industrial decarbonization and is crucial to steel manufacturing. This cooperation will not only help Germany improve its energy independence but will also accelerate the process of industrial decarbonization and lay the foundation for green transformation.
