Mexico announces port’s expansion despite global trade tension

28 Nov 2024 12:02 reported by Stanley Wang

Mexico is doubling down on global trade despite geopolitical challenges, announcing a massive 55 billion peso expansion of its main commercial port in Manzanillo, Colima. The project aims to more than double the port’s capacity, positioning it among the world’s top 20 container ports and the busiest in Latin America by 2030.

The expanded facility will cover 1,800 hectares and handle up to 10 million 20-foot containers annually, rivaling the Port of Los Angeles. While concerns linger over Mexico’s ties with China, President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed claims of Chinese influence, emphasizing plans to boost local production. Officials remain optimistic about the port’s growth despite U.S. tariff threats.
