Since the US imposed tariffs on imported steel products, its domestic steel production was unable to meet the market demand, and the high tariffs also push up steel prices. Till now, the US still depended on importing high volume of steel.

According to the data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the US imported 2 million tons of steel in October, which increased by 7% from September. At the same time, the US domestic steel production increased by 5% compared with the same period of last year.

Since March, the US imposed a 25% tariff on imported steel, the US manufacturing industry turned to source from local steel suppliers and push up the price of local steel.

Although the profit of steel production increased, manufacturers suffered high cost than before. The domestic steel production couldn't fully meet the local market demands. More than one-fifth of the steel supply depended on imports, because the US' steel prices were higher than other countries.

Till this date, the current market share of imported steel was still large and the US was still the world’s largest steel importer.
