thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg has completed a low double-digit million euro modernization of its Walking Beam Furnace 3 (HBO 3). Carried out in four phases between summer 2023 and January 2025 by LOI Thermprocess GmbH, this technical upgrade ensures compliance with future environmental and safety regulations while moving toward climate-neutral steel production.

The project involved replacing 91 burners with high-efficiency, hydrogen-capable models to lower NOx emissions and improve performance. Optimizations also reduced heat loss and energy consumption.

Dr. Christoph Evers, Head of the Medium Strip Mill at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg, said the new technology's H2-readiness is important for decarbonization. This investment confirms thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg's commitment to energy-efficient flat steel production and its site.
