The world's third-largest coal-producing country, India, announced that the fiscal year of 2016-2017 coal imports totaled 190 million tons, the total imports were more than 1 trillion rupees.

In 2015-16, India's coal imports were 203.9 million tons and the import amounted to 860.338 billion rupees,

In the meantime, India's power plants will continue to import coal because of insufficient supply of available coal in the country, which can not to meet supply and demand. At present, India's domestic coal demand greater than market supply.

In 2016-17, the total coal demand was 838.6 million tons, while the domestic supply was 647.7 million tons.
