Namibia's HyIron announced that it will build a hydrogen direct reduction plant in Lingen, Germany, for the production of green iron. It is the largest direct reduction plant in the world.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Environment provided EUR 3 million in funding for the construction of the plant.

In addition to HyIron, RWE and BENTELER Steel/Tube are also involved in this green iron project. The partners are testing the use of sponge iron to melt with scrap and then process into steel, staring in 2024. BENTELER Steel/Tube wants to produce low-CO2 tubes with steel produced in the Lingen plant.

In the future, HyIron's green hydrogen will be produced in RWE’s 14-megawatt pilot electrolysis plant, which was expected to be operational next to the direct reduction plant at the end of this year.
