US EPA repeals power plant emission rules

13 Jun 2025 13:38 reported by Stanley Wang

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the repeal of a 2024 regulation requiring existing coal-fired and future gas-fired power plants to begin capturing carbon emissions over the next decade. EPA Administrator stated that the new rules under the Trump administration aim to reverse industry-destroying policies, and noted that cost-effective emissions controls are currently unavailable.

CEO of Rayburn Electric Cooperative said the revised rules would allow electricity producers more time to assess the viability of fossil fuel assets. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) expressed support for the decision. AISI president emphasized that US power plant emissions have already declined significantly since 2005 and will continue to do so.

The president also warned that the previous mandate would have hindered innovation and placed financial strain on the steel industry, which relies on affordable, reliable electricity. AISI and the American Steel Association also supported Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
