Swedish steelmaker SSAB planned to build a new factory at its plant in Axis, Alabama, equipped with an advanced tempering furnace, and will invest US$74 million to expand the Alabama steel plant's heat treatment capabilities and carry out other infrastructure upgrades.

General Manager of SSAB Alabama, Andy Bramstedt, said that the expansion will enhance their ability to produce high-strength steel products such as Hardox and Strenx, while also increasing the trucking capacity of the Alabama plant. 

Kjell Baeckman, Head of Sales Special Steels, added that this investment not only expands their production capacity for niche market products but also allows them to offer a more complete product portfolio from their Alabama facility, further enhancing their service to customers in North and South America.

This investment underscores their commitment to their customers and the industry as a whole. The project is expected to start this year and is expected to be completed in 2027.
