Japan’s Isuzu Motors first in Japan to use green steel for commercial vehicle production

Japan’s Isuzu Motors (Isuzu) will start using green steel in some mass-produced vehicles and for its EARTH lab, a new electric vehicle (EV) facility in Fujisawa, beginning in April. This is a first for commercial vehicle production in Japan.

Sourced green steel applying the mass balance approach from JFE Steel, Kobe Steel, and Nippon Steel, Isuzu uses this lower-emission steel in the mass production of vehicles, including the battery EV (BEV) light-duty ELF EV truck. The green steel will also be used in the construction of Isuzu's EARTH lab, scheduled for completion in June 2026.

The adoption of certified green steel products of Kobe Steel's Kobenable® Steel, JFE Steel's JGreeX™, and Nippon Steel's NSCarbolex™ Neutral shows Isuzu's commitment to cutting CO2 emissions and working with suppliers towards carbon neutrality.
