Freeport Indonesia to resume operations at Manyar copper smelter in Q3 2025

Freeport Indonesia, an Indonesian copper miner, was expected to resume operations at its Manyar smelter in East Java in the third quarter of 2025 after being shut down due to a fire in October. A spokesman said restoration work was underway.

The smelter was completed in June and production began in September, but operations were delayed by steam and water leaks and shut down again by a fire in October.

Freeport Indonesia has applied to the Indonesian government to extend its expiring copper concentrate export license and requested an increase in export quotas, while the government has yet to decide whether to approve the additional export quota.

Delays at the Manyar smelter, which has an annual production capacity of 480,000 tons of copper cathode, have shrunk the expected metal surplus in 2025, supporting copper prices.
