According to India’s Ministry of Steel, the government is working on a green steel policy framework. The Ministry of Steel has released a new report on Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan.

In the absence of affordable alternatives, the Indian steel industry has resorted to using coal-fired blast furnaces and rotary kilns to produce steel. As a result, India produces steel with an emission intensity of 2.54 t CO2/tcs, which is significantly higher than the global average of 1.91.

The report highlights the need for technological innovation, policy reforms, and financial mechanisms to support a low-emission transition in order to meet the challenges, such as climate commitments and rising energy costs.

The Ministry of Steel's initiative focuses on three key pillars. The first pillar is green steel incentives and ecosystem development. The second one is decarbonization leverage. The last one is the pathways to support transition.
