WV Stahl introduces low emission steel standard (LESS) for certification of low-carbon steel

The German Steel Federation WV Stahl has introduced the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS) in collaboration with stakeholders like the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

LESS aims to be widely used for certifying low-carbon steel and considers production from blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces.

It showcases the current state of transformation and all technological pathways to achieve near-zero steel emissions, making them marketable. The standard initially targets rolled steel products, allowing for alloy additions except for stainless steel, with plans to later include semi-finished steel products.

LESS will be independently certified and fully operational in Brussels by fall 2024.
