EU & US move towards decarbonization framework for aluminum and steel industry

The EU and the US made further progress on a framework towards decarbonization for aluminum and steel sectors ahead of the October deadline. The US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said both sides continued their talks, aiming to develop a joint vision of decarbonization for both sectors.

The countries should find a framework based on a deal reached in 2021 by October this year, which is to cancel US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the EU and adopt a non-tariff quota system. The EU stopped retaliatory tariffs on US’ imports according to the deal.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, reiterated her concerns on January 17 about US and China’s protectionism, promising green deal industrial plans and legislation to help EU enterprises cope with rising energy prices.
