Tata Steel's proposal to cut thousands of jobs as part of its transition to greener steelmaking operations in South Wales has faced increased opposition from workers. The GMB union revealed that 72% of its members at the steel giant voted in favor of industrial action in a recent ballot.

At Tata Steel's Port Talbot and Llanwern sites, Unite union members plan to initiate a "work to rule" policy and ban overtime starting June 18th. This is in response to the company's plans to shut down both blast furnaces, resulting in 2,800 job losses across the UK.

Tata Steel expressed disappointment at the ballot results, having previously warned that it could withdraw enhanced redundancy packages if workers go on strike. Meanwhile, the Community union, representing most workers at Port Talbot, has informed its members that it is considering an improved redundancy offer. Once negotiations conclude, the union will put this offer to a vote among its members.
