It was reported that most of power generation plants in Pakistan relied on imported thermal coal to meet its domestic demand. According to agency statistics, overall coal mine imports in 2019 increased slightly year on year and the main importing countries were South Africa and India.

In 2019, the imported coal was mainly used for power generation, and followed usages were the cement industry and trading.

According to market participants, more than half of raw materials in Pakistan's energy generation came from petrochemical fuels, including coals. The government has planned to develop renewable energy. However, due to the poor quality of wires and the problem of power theft causing debts, the government had to continue to invest in thermal power generation.

It was understood that Pakistan might build two new thermal power plants in accordance with domestic demand for imported coal this year. Therefore, market participants predicted that the coal imports will be growing this year.
