Tadashi Imai, President of Nippon Steel Corp., announced on Tuesday that no determinations have been reached concerning discussions with US President Donald Trump about the company's intended acquisition of U.S. Steel Corp.
This clarification follows Trump's indication of willingness to engage with Nippon Steel executives after his February 7 meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
The proposed acquisition had previously encountered delays under the Biden administration. During a press briefing in Tokyo, Imai stated that Nippon Steel is on the verge of beginning talks with the Trump administration related to the US$14.1 billion deal, noting that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will oversee the negotiations.
