India’s stainless steel market is displaying divergent momentum across grades, the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) confirmed in its latest fiscal-year report. Consumption rose by 8% year on year to 4.85 million tons in 2024-25, propelled chiefly by brisk uptake of 200-series and 400-series material, while 300-series offtake remained subdued.

The 200-series growth was due to constrained import availability, whereas the 400-series gains were linked to limited imports and more applications.

Indian domestic mills, operating at roughly 60% of a 7.5 million tons nameplate capacity, are expected to have growth potential in stainless steel production under the support of policies and continued demand.

The association projects national consumption to reach 12.5-12.7 million tons by the fiscal year 2040 and 19-20 million tons by the fiscal year 2047, underpinned by emerging demand from several sectors like renewable energy, water storage, and aerospace projects.
