Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro is testing emission-free plasma technology at the Sunndal casthouse, working towards its goal of zero carbon dioxide emissions in aluminum production. The project received soft funding from the Norwegian government.

Eivind Kallevik, the Executive Vice President and Head of Aluminium Metal at Norsk Hydro, said that the success of the pilot project at Sunndal will have influences not just on the aluminum industry but on other industries around the world that are struggling to reduce emissions.

The company aims to melt the first aluminum with near-zero emissions at the Sunndal casthouse by the fourth quarter of 2025, which is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions by more than 500 tons per year.
