Construction of the Christmas Creek green iron plant project invested by Fortescue has begun. This project will use green hydrogen to produce high-purity pig iron and is expected to produce green iron metal by the end of 2025.

Currently, the Christmas Creek Renewable Hydrogen Mobility Project is in operation, with its hydrogen refueling center located at Fortescue's Green Energy Center in the Pilbara mining area.

The project cost US$33.8 million, with US$2 million in funding and 10 hydrogen fuel cell coaches from the Cook Government's Renewable Hydrogen Fund. These hydrogen-powered coaches will replace Fortescue's diesel coaches for transporting crew at Christmas Creek.

The facility is expected to produce about 195 tons of renewable hydrogen per year.
