Fire accident at Visakhapatnam steel plant, no fatalities

21 May 2025 15:39 reported by Lily Nguyen

A major fire broke out at a steel manufacturing facility in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, when roughly 300 tons of molten steel spilled from its transport container. Emergency response crews successfully extinguished the blaze with no fatalities reported, preventing what could have been a catastrophic industrial accident.

Initial reports suggest the incident occurred while molten steel was being transported from the blast furnace to the steel melting facility using a Transfer Ladle Car (TLC) system. The ladle, a large vessel designed to hold molten metal, apparently developed a failure in the TLC mechanism, causing the superheated steel to cascade onto the ground.

The extreme temperatures from the spilled metal ignited fires that subsequently damaged power lines and compromised track infrastructure in the immediate vicinity.
