Kurum, a steel-making mill in Albania, has suspended its steel production at the Elbasan plant. Financial problems were the main factor in this suspension.

Kurum mainly produces steel rebars. The drop in international steel prices caused Kurum’s financial tension. Mass layoffs for administrative staff were not implemented. Now Kurum is negotiating with the union to offer a number of these staff layoff options with back pay and time served.

During the suspension, Kurum will start its substantial repairs. After the project, the mill’s industrial lines will be greatly modernized.
