thyssenkrupp Steel planned to start a tender for the supply of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen in early February. Hydrogen will accelerate the decarbonization of thyssenKrupp Steel’s plant in Duisburg.

The company planned to switch from a blast furnace to a direct reduced iron plant. It seeks to sign a 10-year supply contract and is willing to receive hydrogen made from renewable power and natural gas through carbon capture and utilization or storage (CCUS).

The German government has offered EUR 2 billion through public funds to support the project, of which EUR 1.45 billion of the support is conditional payment, which covers extra costs for purchasing renewable hydrogen rather than supply made from natural gas with CCUS.
