Russia’s Nornickel, one of the largest producers of nickel, platinum, and copper, recently announced that it would expand its nickel production capacity at its Harjavalta smelter in Finland in two phases.

In the first phase, it was expected to increase the nickel production to 75,000 tons by 2023, and in the second phase, it would be further increased to more than 100,000 tons before the beginning of 2026.

Harjavalta smelter is a leading nickel and cobalt producer in the electric vehicle battery industry. The increasing demand for battery raw materials in Europe has prompted the company to decide to expand its plant.

The General Manager of Harjavalta smelter expressed that the company's unique product portfolio, coupled with the electric vehicle battery metal recycling program, made Nornickel a leading European supplier of key metals in the growing battery industry in Europe.
