JFE Steel, the second-largest steel manufacturer in Japan, has developed the world's first infrared laser portable carbon monoxide detector in collaboration with Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation and Gastar. This detector uses a 2.3-micron band system for the first time and can instantly detect carbon monoxide-containing gases within 16 meters.

In the process of collaborative development, JFE Steel was responsible for determining business needs, testing them, and evaluating them. Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions was responsible for developing test model specifications and coordinating development. Gastar was responsible for developing test models and testing the performance of the detector.

Currently, JFE Steel is studying the mass production of the device and expects to launch a commercial product in 2025. In addition, they will further evaluate its feasibility for installation on drones and mobile robots.
