One of Canada's largest steel manufacturers, Algoma Steel, is reportedly shutting down two production lines indefinitely as part of its transition to electric arc furnace production.
Laura Devoni, the company's director of human resources and corporate affairs, said the company had made the decision to indefinitely idle the 106-inch mill and the No. 1 temper mill line in order to adapt to the ever-changing steel market and that the company is focusing on operational and commercial efforts on plate production and sales as part of the company's growth strategy, using the newly modernized plate mill.
Algoma's 106-inch mill can roll low-carbon steel slabs into plates with widths up to 96 inches, one of the widest mills of its kind in North America.
