It is reported that Brazil-based Gerdau SA , the largest steel producer of long products in the North and South America, with steel mills in all countries across Americas an installed capacity of 26 million metric tons of steel per year proposed to sell its 5 steel rebar mill in the United States in 2017 to US based Commercial Metals Company that owns steel minimills in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas, and Poland and recycling facilities around the world. The long product steel production plants that Gerdau is set for sale include facilities California, New Jersey, Rancho Cucamonga, Sayreville, and Knoxville, Tennessee. Gerdau operates at least 36 rebar fabrication locations across the USA. This deal that could close in the coming weeks or months, according to market sources. If the deal goes ahead, it will up-end the rebar market in the USA, writing off one of three major producers and leaving two mills with big downstream operations in a face-off, market participants said.
