Thailand's Industry Ministry has decided to gradually cancel certification for steel produced using induction furnace (IF) technology after finding it fails to meet industry quality standards and causes serious environmental pollution. Concerns were raised over IF technology's higher dust and toxic gas emissions compared to advanced methods, such as electric arc furnaces (EAF) or basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking, and inconsistencies in steel quality.

In contrast, Thailand's EAF steelmaking capacity is currently at 4.3 million tons annually, offering lower emissions and more stable quality. With EAF capacity exceeding the local rebar demand of 2.8 million tons, the decision to phase out IF steel production showed the rationality of the Thai policy initiatives.
