India moves to boost domestic scrap production amid import dependence

17 Apr 2025 16:34 reported by Evelyn Wu

India is exploring new strategies to reduce its reliance on imported scrap by increasing the local supply. The Ministry of Steel is considering the creation of a permanent interdepartmental body to coordinate efforts across industries and expand the domestic scrap base. Currently, 25% of the country’s scrap demand is met through imports.

Authorities are now targeting other high-potential sectors like engineering and consumer goods for scrap generation. Discussions are underway to extend existing vehicle scrappage incentives to these areas. Industry experts also highlight the untapped capacity of ship dismantling centers and call for more focus on recycling end-of-life consumer goods.

With steel imports on the rise and exports declining, India is seeking to strengthen its internal recycling system to reduce dependence on imported scrap and ensure long-term supply.
