Assofermet, an association representing Italian scrap, raw materials, and steel product distributors, has raised concerns over the impact of the US re-imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. 

Starting March 12, the Trump administration reinstated a 25% tariff, which could destabilize global steel and aluminum markets and severely affect Europe. The new tariffs not only remove previously granted exemptions but also introduce additional tariff categories, amplifying the negative effects on the global supply chain.

European steel producers, known for their high-quality products, will face significant challenges, as US markets may no longer be accessible. 

Additionally, increased imports of Asian steel into the EU could distort prices. The association warns that this could lead to higher production costs, inflationary pressure, and a loss of competitiveness for European manufacturers. 

Assofermet urges the EU to take broader measures to protect its steel industry and maintain its competitiveness in global markets.
