US President Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on all imported steel and aluminum products starting March 12, and the exemptions and duty-free quotas for Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries will be canceled.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan stated that since Taiwan's steel companies have shifted to high-value specialty products in recent years due to low-price competition from Chinese steelmakers, the competitive situation will not be significantly affected by the US new tariffs. The ministry said it will continue to assist companies in transformation and pay close attention to US tariff policy.

According to data from the Taiwan Steel and Iron Industries Association, Taiwan's steel exports to the US have rebounded in recent years, reaching 1.598 million tons in 2024. The association said the impact of US comprehensive tariffs on all countries remains to be seen.
