Tata Steel develops hydrogen-compliant API X65 grade pipes for hydrogen transportation

4 Feb 2025 16:32 reported by Joy Liu

Tata Steel, a leading steelmaker in India, has developed hydrogen-compatible API X65 grade steel pipes, becoming the first Indian company to create pipes for hydrogen transportation.

Manufactured at the Khopoli plant and tested at RINA-CSM (Italy), these pipes can transport 100% pure hydrogen gas under high pressure (100 bar). This achievement supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Tata Steel’s R&D team developed the technology in-house. Demand for hydrogen-compatible steel is expected to grow from 2026-2027, reaching 350,000 tons in the coming years.
